ABOUT THIS TOOL

About the Image Compressor

Large images slow down web pages and fill up email attachments. The HandyTools Image Compressor re-encodes your picture at a quality level you choose and lets you download a smaller file, in JPEG, WebP or PNG format.

Compression happens locally in your browser, so your photo is not uploaded by this tool. The quality setting applies to JPEG and WebP; PNG is lossless, so it saves less space.

Tips for best results

  • A quality of about 70 to 85 usually keeps photos looking good while cutting the file size noticeably.
  • JPEG and WebP give the smallest files for photographs; PNG is better for graphics with sharp edges or transparency.
  • Compress a copy and keep your original, because lossy compression cannot be undone.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing an image reduce its quality?

JPEG and WebP compression removes some detail. At moderate settings the difference is hard to see, but lower values show more artifacts.

Which format gives the smallest file?

For photos, WebP and JPEG are usually much smaller than PNG. Compare the downloaded sizes to be sure.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is processed in your browser by this tool.
